Lingo vol. 1

So, you're thinking about going into the poker room but don't want to make a fool of yourself? There is a certain amount of lingo that it is important to know when you go into the poker room if you want to look like you've been doing this for a while.

  • “Under the gun” is the first person to act before the flop, so he's directly to the left of the big blind.
  • The “cutoff” is one to the right of the button, because she can cut off the button's steal with a steal of her own.
  • One to the right of cutoff is the “hijack” because – you guessed it – he can hijack the cutoff's steal.

*Presumably you could work your way around the table calling people the heist, the thieving bastard, the show-stealer, and so on, but it's probably a good thing no one's taken it beyond hijack.
